Architectural Walking Guide
The old city of Willemstad is made up of four quarters: Punda, Scharloo and Pietermaai on the eastern side, and Otrobanda on the western side of the St. Anna Bay.
With approximately 750 monuments in the city, whose structures have not materially changed during their lifespan of three centuries, these buildings, which were originally Dutch, have developed through different cultural influences to make Willemstad a unique city in the Caribbean.
This uniqueness was the main consideration of UNESCO that led to placing ‘Historic Willemstad’ on the World Heritage List in December 1997.
